BRAND (FIRE) III – Resistance within riches

Premiere – Resistance in the Global North

In November 2012, an activist with an elaborate tunnel entrenchment in the Hambach Forest ended the silence surrounding the deforestation of this formerly gigantic forest area in the city triangle, Cologne, Dusseldorf and Aachen, which had been in operation since 1972. Far beyond the local borders, the clearing of the ancient Hambach forests by the energy company RWE became known. Today only 10% of this forest is left. Activists from various groups had set themselves the task of making the Rhenish lignite mining area a focal point for the fight against coal-fired power generation.
Five years later, in the summer and autumn of 2017, more than 10,000 people took part in protests around the opencast mines.

In BRAND III, Susanne Fasbender looks back on the first climate camps in the Rhineland, visited committed citizens against health damage caused by brown coal power generation and tells the story of forest occupation in the Hambach Forest. In cooperation with the Hambacher Forst Filmkollektiv, she has accompanied several of the many events of the resistance over several years in order to not only document these individual border crossings, but also to give them a space in which underlying concepts are explained and personal thoughts have their say. Activists speak of tactics and motivation, of their experiences of living in the forest and, at the same time, confronting their fight for a livable future for an anti-ecological counterinsurgency with an uncertain outcome.
