Open letter to the employees of RWE and to the union IGBCE

This letter was also distributed to trade unionists, see Action Marximal Confusion

Dear trade unionists, dear employees of RWE,

I write to you as an activist from the Hambach Forest. I know there were almost always bad words between us in the past. But we wonder if it must be like that.

After all, you’re just scared not to be able to care for you and your families if you should lose your job. That’s more than understandable. And we want our children and grandchildren to have a livable planet as well. This may be understandable for you.

Actually, like us, you’re scared of RWE. We, because they are going to destroy our homes and our future. You, because they may no longer give you what you need to live. We could have a common opponent. Actually, it has always been the role of a trade union, to represent the interests of employees in relation to their company? And let’s be honest, we all know what will happen in the next few years. Sooner or later, RWE will exit from the lignite and collect millions of compensations and severance payments. You as a simple employee will not see anything like that. And you can be sure that no one on the management level will get into any existential problems.

So start doing what a union should do. Demand to be involved in the severance payments, to continue to be paid after the coal exit, even if your workforce is no longer needed (because, honestly, who likes working above all?). Increase the weight of your demands with strikes or sabotage. After all, the 40-hour week and the weekend were not won because the unions sucked up to the companies.

Maybe you can just come and visit us and talk over a tea, beer or juice about how we can help each others to keep your and our livelihoods? Maybe we can ally against the corporation that attacks us and sweats you? And if not, can we at least try to understand our mutual fears and reduce personal enmity, even when we afterwards are back on different sides?

And maybe we realize that we both want the same world? A world where you even have a right to a good life if you can not or do not want to sell your labor right now?

I do not want you to be our enemy. Our enemies are named RWE and capitalism. And you are suffering from them just like us.

But if you come to destroy our homes we will fight back. Not out of hatred for you. But out of necessity. I’m sure you understand that. I’m sure if someone came to your house, ripped off your house and threatened your family, then you would defend yourself with all means available. And if someone tries to destroy my home and threatens my (chosen) family, I will also resort to any means to resist to it. I hope that this does not lead to troubles between us.

Optimistic greetings, an activist

PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT 06.09.18

TREEHOUSES BEING EVICTED, TREES CUT, TODAY MARKS DAY X

The polices forces of NRW have currently begun the eviction of treehouses in the Hambach Forest occupation. They will now be violently removing activists and destroying the infrastructure of the occupation, in order to prepare for RWEs continued clearing of the 12.000 year old Hambach Forest.
In this way Herbert Reul (CDU), interior minister of the state of Northrhine-Westphalia, is actively attacking climate justice and democratic civil rights, in support of fossil-fuel giant RWE and the coal-lobby, clearly showing the corruption inherent in the capitalist system.

With the eviction of the first tree houses, the Hambach Forest occupation, alongside several action-alliances (including Ende Gelände, Aktion Unterholz, and Buirer Für Buir) are calling out: Day X is here, and a new phase of the struggle has begun.
In the next days, while RWE employees, with support from the hired soldiers of the German state, attempt to evict the occupation, hundreds of people will join the forest struggle, in order to protect the climate justice protest-camp, and there are many ways to take part. See the text “How do I become active?” for more information.

Leila, an activist from the occupied forest, says: “This is the time for action. RWE wants the protest silenced, the activists imprisoned, the forest cut, and the German state is spending millions of euros in order to support this wish. This capitalist corruption is NOT to be accepted, and we will continue struggling until the last tree is cut, and beyond!”

DEMONSTRATION IN SUPPORT OF HAMBI 5.9 WED Buir Train-station.

Regardless of, and perhaps especially because of the now 3 weeks of massive police actions: barricade clearings, constant harassment, arrests (now of 26+ all but 2 now released) meadow raid and confiscations, and now the information that large police action might be planned for this Wednesday the response to all this Climate Killing Bullshit has just been freaking phenomenal.  Supporters have been constantly streaming in and despite the searches, bringing over a ton of eviction food and supplies (with tools, pallets and climbing supplies being stolen by the co2ps).  Hundreds have visited, stayed and supported regardless of constant harassment even of the official protest Mahnwache, access to which is “legally” guaranteed without id checks and controls (those pressing this issue have been able to get in without being checked, others have just given their names without presenting ids). Also please remember that the forest is large so it is really hard to cut off all access from outside…

There has been mobilization of countless local support groups, initiatives, and even, yes, NGOs taking on the cause of Hambacher Forest, still more people packing their backpacks and joining the struggle would be good as well.  There has also been explosion of articles and reportage from the forest, all with the exception of local coal press being fairly positive.  This however does not change the fact that the escalation to push the Planet past catastrophic 2 degree climate warming and the run away global warming points of no return continues with at least 6 police vans posted around Hambi trying to control people coming to the forest and evictions and cutting of last portion of the forest being in the works regardless of the official Kohle Kommission coal exit narrative.

So counter balancing possible thousands of Co2ps  on the could be in the forest on this very same day is a valid climate justice and grass roots strategy.  One that can especially lift up the morally and spirits of the forest activists facing police violence, destruction of their homes and of their beloved unique on European scale habitat…

#HambiBleibt #HambacherForst: Please use those hashtags on twitter with updates on the situation from the demo and in case Fossil Fool Herbert Reul’s Co2ps attack Hambi excerpting the highest violence ever extended to all life on this planet, destabilizing the climate and future of the only life bearing world.

Solidarity against Repression!

In the course of militarized assault on the meadow on August 28, an activist from the forest was taken down off the kitchen roof after updating the outside on the situation in the meadow and arrested He was taken to the police HQ in Aachen, where he was identified. It was found that there is still an outstanding fines for previous accusations resulting out of actions in the Hambach Forest. The police therefore threatened with a sentence of 150 days jail. The daily rates were advanced by a solidarity private person who is no financial standing to cover the costs long term. As fines are an attempt to drain financial resources of the movement please help us gather funds to at least partially repay this sum. We ask you to carry together this penalty of 1500 € (10 € x 150 days) ! Please participate in this donation call. No JUStice – no peace!
