Our motivation for the walk into the mine last Sunday

Long, intense, exhausting and sad weeks are behind us. The decision of the court in Münster cools down the conflict about the Hambach Forest for the time being. It is important for us to emphasize that this is not just a result of the court decision but, above all, one of resistance, years of struggle and activists who have made determined efforts to preserve the forest on many levels.

We want to show that the fight for the Hambi goes beyond the forest borders.

Bat rescue action
The Hambach Forest is a biodiverse area containing many rare animal and plant species, including the dormouse and the Bechstein’s bat. This unique biotope is being destroyed by the coal mining activities of the company RWE in North Rhine Westphalia. Environmental activists of BUND and NABU and many independent nature preservationists are fighting to protect the forest and its species.

On the 6 October, 50,000 people joined a protest in the Hambach Forest. One of the main reasons for the outrage was that RWE, in addition to forcibly relocating the bats, is intentional destroying their nesting places with stapled plastic pieces and tape. This means that the bats are disturbed during their nesting season, which typically takes place every autumn, and are driven out of the area or even locked up.

Activists in the forest created a courageous bat rescue team, which took every step possible to protect the Bechstein’s bats from starvation and death.

Complaint against the immediate and complete eviction of the protest camp at Hambach Forest!

For October 9th, the immediate and complete eviction of the protest camp on the meadow at Hambach Forest was announced. Kurt Claßen, the owner of the meadow, however, submitted the complaint below.
Update: The eviction has been canceled.
 
 
“Dear Mr. Prime Minister,
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Government of North Rhine-Westphalia,

In time and in the exercise of the rights under the Constitution, a complaint was filed today at the department of building inspection of the district of Düren against the intention of the NRW regime for immediate and complete eviction of the protest camp at the Hambach Forest.

If this constitutionally guaranteed right of complaint should be disregarded and tomorrow the complete and immediate eviction of the protest camp should begin, the NRW-Regime has to assume that immediately after tomorrow the immediate and complete shutdown of the open pit Hambach will be started, otherwise only later.
