Bat rescue action
The Hambach Forest is a biodiverse area containing many rare animal and plant species, including the dormouse and the Bechstein’s bat. This unique biotope is being destroyed by the coal mining activities of the company RWE in North Rhine Westphalia. Environmental activists of BUND and NABU and many independent nature preservationists are fighting to protect the forest and its species.

On the 6 October, 50,000 people joined a protest in the Hambach Forest. One of the main reasons for the outrage was that RWE, in addition to forcibly relocating the bats, is intentional destroying their nesting places with stapled plastic pieces and tape. This means that the bats are disturbed during their nesting season, which typically takes place every autumn, and are driven out of the area or even locked up.

Activists in the forest created a courageous bat rescue team, which took every step possible to protect the Bechstein’s bats from starvation and death.

Currently an excavator of RWE is blocked. On 6.10.2018 activists near the bucket wheels forced the excavator driver to stop the machine. Today on Oct.7th about 11:00 am the police tried to cordon off a wide area around the excavator. The fire department is talking to the activists. An eviction of the occupation is not in the sense of the police because of the proximity to the edge of the dug slope.

Excavator stopped. Today, Oct 5 at 12:00 in EastEnd.

About 12:00, about twenty adults and children moved to the new ramparts that RWE piled up.

The ramparts are heaped up in height to about 2.50 meters with gravel and earth and provided with barrier tape. The trench directly behind it has been dredged to a depth of approximately 2.80 meters. Marking woods are labeled as “pipelines”. This inscription is not necessarily believable, because the rampart obviously serves as a barrier to prepare the enclosure of the section to be deforested next, which is currently on ice for the time being as a consequence of the current court decision.
